Functions of RTO Tamil Nadu

Here are the major roles and functions performed by RTO Tamil Nadu:

  • The RTO is responsible for administering driving tests and certifying drivers by issuing valid driving licenses.

Tamil Nadu Vehicle Registration Details and Process

The procedure for permanent registration for vehicles in Tamil Nadu is as follows:

  • To register a vehicle in Tamil Nadu, one must submit an application in the specified Form 20 to the Transport Department/RTO in your area. Form 20 can be received from the RTO or downloaded online from TN RTO website (https://tnsta.gov.in/). 
  • An applicant must present the sales certificate issued by the dealer/manufacturer, the manufacturer's roadworthiness certificate, a copy of the vehicle insurance, proof of address, the original print of the vehicle chassis number, and other documents.
  • Receipt of one-time road tax paid to the transportation department, as well as payment of registration fee.
  • The registering authority will assign a registration mark to the vehicle when it has been inspected.

Document Required for Vehicle Registration in Tamil Nadu

  • Application Form-20 (one additional copy if the vehicle is hypothecated).
  • Form 21 - certificate of sale.
  • The vehicle manufacturer's roadworthiness certificate, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and Form-22.
  • Three copies of passport-size pictures.
  • Non-transport vehicle lifetime tax.
  • Temporary Registration Certificate.
  • Form-60/61, or a Pan card Vehicle Insurance Certificate.
  • Address proof.

How to Get a License from RTO Tamil Nadu?

To obtain a driving license in Tamil Nadu, you must first complete the following steps:

  • The applicant must obtain the application form from the Tamil Nadu State government website (https://tnsta.gov.in/).
  • Fill out the form and submit the printed form to the RTO office.
  • The applicant will need to choose an appropriate date and time for the driving test.
  • The RTO officer will then check the information, after which the applicant will be able to take the driving test.
  • After completing the test, the applicant will be issued a driving license via speed post.
