Tata Power will invest ₹30,000 crore in Assam for setting up to 5000 MW renewable energy projects. The projects will cater to solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage over a span of five years.
Tata Power has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government at Advantage Assam 2.0. Assam government will help identify the required land and allocate around 20,000 acres of government land on a lease basis for these projects besides helping in the acquisition of private land. The state government will facilitate infrastructure development for smooth transmission connectivity and create Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies. The government will facilitate clearances through a single window for approvals and financial incentives, and encourage partnerships with research institutions for innovation in the renewable sector.
Facilitating Group Captive sites to identify land for Group Captive sites for industries and tea gardens to get clean energy. “Talent development programs will be launched to build a trained manpower for execution and operation of the project.” These collaborations will lead to jobs for 3000 local youth.
The renewable energy potential for the state has been pegged at 14,487 MW with goals of achieving 500 MW by 2027. The development is in line with the Government of Assam's clean energy transition and renewable energy goals.
Tata Power has clarified that its subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), has signed one more MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). It will promote larger rooftop solar installations as well as smaller applications under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) program.
In Assam, Tata Power has already set up 20 MW of solar rooftop capacity, more than 300 EV home chargers, and over 20 public EV charging stations.
Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, said, MoUs are significant steps towards the development of renewable and clean energy capacity, will boost the energy security of the state and accelerate economic growth, providing employment opportunities. He added that Tata Power is also committed to providing sustainable energy solutions in line with the Assam Government’s vision for a greener future and India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2030.
