Indian stock markets on 28 February 2025 are at the crossroads amid continuing selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs), looming tariffs from Trump, and a lack of clarity on Q3 GDP data. Global cues show most losses in Europe and America, as the major indices on these fronts recently gave up 1-2 percent. This suggests an initial gap-down for India as well, with GIFT Nifty Futures trading 140 points lower at 22,542 on checks. Here’s a closer look at the stocks making moves and the undercurrents affecting market sentiment.

Stocks to Watch

Tata Power: TP Solar, a subsidiary of Tata Power, has won an order valued at ₹632 crore to supply 292.5 MWp of solar modules to SECI, delivery of which is due between October 2025 and January 2026. This is in line with SECI's larger 400 MWp tender.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC): LIC is facing a ₹479.88-crore demand notice for GST short payments during 2020-21, arguing with authorities over incorrect availing of the input tax credit (ITC) and availing over reversals, and interest and tax liability issues. LIC can file an appeal to the Joint Commissioner of State Tax (Appeals), Mumbai.

RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd): RVNL is a consortium member within the Bharat Ports Global consortium, a strategic measure aimed at enhancing India's footprint in the international maritime landscape via effectual international bids complementary infrastructure for port expansion

Coal India: A wholly-owned subsidiary of Coal India Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) will levy ₹300 per tonne as "Singrauli Punarasthapan (rejuvenation) Charge" on dispatches of contracts issued on or before 30 April 2025, which will generate ₹3,877.50 crore. The levy would be applicable uniformly at the notified price of coal.

Power Finance Corporation (PFC): PFC entered into an initial agreement for ₹26,800 crore financing to Madhya Pradesh's power utilities, which will go towards capital expenditure projects (including setting up of new thermal units and smart metering).

Paytm: Paytm is embedding Perplexity AI’s search functionality to enable users to research subjects in Indian dialects and improve economic decision-making, using AI as a tool to increase its profitability.

JSW Infrastructure: JSW Infra is aggressively focused on inorganic growth in logistics, as it is bidding for container freight station (CFS) and inland container depot (ICD) businesses through the NCLT. The company has allocated ₹ 30,000 crore for its ports business and ₹ 9,000 crore for logistics from an overall capital expenditure of ₹ 39,000 crore by FY30.

Market Dynamics

Global Influences: The US jobless claims data wasn't great news, with the total coming in at 242,000 versus the forecast 221,000, which weighed on Wall St, but most international trends on the day were quite positive.

Commodities: Oil prices have soared more than 2 percent on renewed supply worries.

Index Revisions: MSCI will remove Adani Green Energy from the MSCI India index and add Hyundai Motor India Ltd, effective at the close of trading on 28 February 2025.

Aviation Trends: Domestic air traffic in January grew 11.28% to 1.46 crore passengers. The market share of IndiGo has increased to 65.2% while that of Air India Group has slipped to 25.7%.

Sectoral Pressures

Demand more strides pressure from wires and cables sector wise; UltraTech Cement; shares of Polycab India; KEI Industries; Havells India, RR Kabel. This is because UltraTech Cement entered the W&C segment with a massive investment of ₹1,800 crore, which has increased competition and dented margins.
