Automakers released April auto sales numbers. Most major automakers posted a positive trend in sales figures with a rise in units sold in the domestic market. Maruti Suzuki, however, recorded a fall in sales when compared to April 2021.
The companies mentioned that the shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month.
At the time of writing this*, major automakers witnessed a fall in stock price amidst a weak market. Eicher Motors witnessed a fall of over 3.5%, Tata Motors and TVS motor of over 1% while Ashok Leyland, Maruti Suzuki, M&M, and Hero MotoCorp recorded fall in the range of 0-1%.

Tata Motors reported a 74% year-on-year jump in its total sales in April to 72,468 units. Domestic sales of the company increased 81% year on year to 71,467 units.
Total Passenger Vehicle (PV) sales in India increased 66% to 41,587 units in the month as compared to 25,095 units sold in April 2021.
Total sales including exports marked an increase of 42% to 11,847 units as compared to 8,340 units sold in the same month last year.
Ashok Leyland’s total domestic sales stood at 11,197 units – a 41% increase over the previous year-ago period.
In the domestic market, the sales number of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) stood at 4,124 – an increase of 4% when compared to 3978 LCVs sold in April 2021.
Mahindra & Mahindra’s overall auto sales for the month of April 2022 stood at 45640 vehicles.
Total passenger vehicle sales stood at 22,526 units – an increase of 23% as compared to April 2021. Total exports of the company recorded an increase of 35% to 2,703 units.
The company’s farm equipment sector recorded total sales of 40,939 – an increase of 49% when compared to April 2021.
April cumulative sales of Maruti Suzuki declined by 5.7% – it sold a total of 1.50 lakh units during the month as compared to 1.59 lakh units in the year-ago period.
Total domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,21,995 units – marking a 10.22% year-on-year fall.
Total exports stood at 18,413 units for the month, marking an increase of 6.82% when compared to 17,237 units exported in April 2021.

Eicher Motors sold 62,155 motorcycles in the month of April 2022 compared to 53,298 motorcycles in April 2021 – an increase of 17%.
Exports witnessed a year-on-year growth of 84% as the company exported 8,303 units in April 2022 as compared to 4,509 units in the same month of last year.
Hero MotoCorp sold 4.19 lakh units of motorcycles and scooters in April 2022, as compared to 3.72 lakh units sold in the corresponding month last year – an increase of 12.4%
Exports stood at 20,132 units for the month as compared to 29,671 units sold in April 2021 – a fall of 32.15%.
The company mentioned that with the economy gradually opening up and continued government policy support, April
volumes indicate the continuously improving consumer sentiments.
Total sales of TVS Motor Company increased 24% to 2,95,308 units in April 2022 as compared to the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales stood at 2,80,022 units as compared to 2,26,193 units in April 2021 – an increase of 24%.
The company’s international business registered a growth of 6% as it recorded exports of 1,13,427 units in the month of April 2022 against sales of 1,07,185 units in April 2021.
The three-wheeler segment of the company registered sales of 15,286 units in April 2022 against sales of 12,790 units in April 2021 – a growth of 20%.
