As of 2020, the company has a workforce of more than 51,500 employees working across its subsidiaries. The company offers assistance to advisors, individuals, institutions and employers. It has its operations in about 20 countries across the world. Some of these countries are Mexico, Australia, India, Japan, the United States of America, Argentina, France, South Korea, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, Chile, the United Kingdom, etc.
Its subsidiaries offer products and services like life insurance, annuities, workplace benefits for advisors, pension risk transfer, PGIM investments, structure settlements, retirement plans, health insurance, etc. As of 2021, it offers these services to more than 40 countries and has provided gross life insurance of about $4 trillion worldwide. Prudential is the largest life insurer in the US in terms of total admitted assets and the world's 10th largest investment manager. Three of its primary divisions are International Insurance Division, US Retirement Solutions & Investment Management Division and US Individual Life & Group Insurance Division.
The company was founded in 1875 as The Widows and Orphans Friendly Society by John F Dryden. The company was later named Prudential Friendly, and the history of this company until 1975 became the topic of a book called Three Cents A Week. Over the years, it has acquired companies like Bache & Co. in 1981, American Skanda in 2003, CIGNA Corporation in 2004, American International Group's AIG Starr and AIG Edison in 2011, The Hartford's life insurance business in 2013, Assurance IQ Inc. in 2019, etc.
Prudential Financial Inc. shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol PRU. It is also a component of the Standard & Poor's 500 index. Fortune recognised PRU in its 2019 list of "Change the World" companies and ranked it 30th in it. As of 2020, it is both a Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500 company.
