Though the company was established in 1958, its origin dates back to 1833 when Stafford Allen and Charles May decided to produce pure drugs. They formed a company named Stafford Allen & Sons Ltd. and focused on preparing essential oils. On the other hand, in 1851, William John Bush acquired a small factory and started the WJ Bush & Co. In 1869, Boake and Roberts found their chemical brewing company called A. Boake Roberts Ltd. Following that in 1884 Ottens Flavours was founded by Henry Ottens, and in 1889 Joseph Polak and Leopold Schwarz opened Polak and Schwarz. The last company that is a part of the present IFF was formed through the merger of van Ameringen and Dr William t. Haebler called Ameringen-Haeblar Inc. in 1929.
After almost three decades, International Flavours and Fragrances Inc. was finally formed through the merger of Polak & Schwarz and van Ameringen-Hebler. Eventually, other companies joined it one by one through acquisitions and mergers to create IFF, the company it is now. The company entered the New York Stock Exchange in 1964 under the ticker symbol IFF. It also trades in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange under the same symbol and is one of the S&P 500 companies.;
