FMC’s history began in 1883, when its founder John Bean, a retired inventor, began building better insecticide spray pumps. He patented his invention and started to retail it in his shop behind his house. In 1904, his company was incorporated under the name Bean Spray Pump Company. By 1928, it renamed itself to John Bean Manufacturing Company and entered the San Francisco Exchange on 14th September of the same year. In the following years, it underwent several mergers and acquisitions to expand its reach across the globe. In 1961, it changed its name back to FMC Corporation and the next year re-aligned itself into three divisions - Organic, Niagara and Inorganic. Throughout the 1960s it underwent significant expansions and established operations in Tokyo, Moscow, Sao Paulo etc. In 1978, FMC became the second-largest producer of hydrogen peroxide in the world.
