The company was formed in the year 1998 by investors who took over General Motors' P30/P32 series step van and motorhome chassis manufacture. The products of the company include discontinued vehicles; The P-series was Workhorse's first product, based on the Chevrolet/GMC P30-series step van/mobile home chassis, Workhorse briefly offered the MetroStar, an integrated chassis/body type reminiscent of the long-defunct International Harvester Metro Van series. Navistar, the firm's parent corporation was in charge of this product, W-15 pickup truck; Workhorse, an electrically driven pickup truck, Octocopter; Workhorse stated that their SureFly, an electric vertical takeoff and landing octocopter, made its premiere at the 2019 North American International Auto Show, horsefly drone; Workhorse began developing HorseFly, a truck-mounted drone, in 2016.
