In 1986, Aart J. de Geus founded SNPS as Optimal Solutions in Triangle Park, North Carolina. It aimed to develop and sell market synthesis technology, which was originally developed at General Electric.
It provides specialised electronic design automation (EDA) software that is utilised to design and test integrated circuits (chips). Moreover, the IP products provided by Synopsys are pre-designed circuits that are generally utilised as a part of larger chip designs. The notable products of Synopsys include static time analysis, behavioural synthesis, transistor-level circuit simulators, logic synthesis and more. Since its inception, SNPS has completed the acquisition of more than 60 companies. Over 5 of these acquisitions came from private equity firms. It completed one of the most significant acquisitions in 2017 when it purchased Black Duck Software for approximately $565 million. SNPS has acquired companies in more than 8 different American states and over 10 countries worldwide. Some of the most targeted sectors of Synopsys include semiconductors and software. In 2002, Synopsys completed the acquisition of Avanti Corporation for an estimated $735 million in stock. Six years later, Synopsis purchased Symplicity Corporation, a semiconductor design and manufacturing company, for approximately $227 million. In 2016, Forbes ranked SNPS 80th on America’s Best Midsize Employers list. In 2020, SNPS occupied the 290th position on the Forbes Global 2000 list.;
