Jerome Monroe Smucker founded the J.M. Smucker Company in 1897 in the city of Orrville, Ohio where it has been headquartered since. He began by selling apple butter and cider door-to-door from a wagon. The company was incorporated after he founded a cider mill in 1897. A manufacturer of peanut butter, jam, beverages, ice-cream toppings, dog food, cat food, and oil, the company expanded its quarters in 1935.
During the World War 2, its apple butter was a part of the US military army sanctions. In 1959, the company went public and issued around 165,000 shares. From the 1960s onward, the company expanded its products to include ketchup (1963) and peanut butter (1965). Its jam was used by Kellog’s in their pop tarts. From the 1980s, this company started manufacturing its products for international users expanding to Canada and then Australia. In 1982, the company launched an ice-cream topping called Magic Shell. Some of the brands owned by J.M. Smucker are King Kelly Orange Marmalade, Fruit Butter, Dickinson’s Gourmet Preserves, Jif, Grape PB&J, Robin Hood Flour, Dunkin Donuts, Tenderleaf Tea, etc.
The group acquired Enray in 2013 and Ainsworth Pet Nutrition in 2018. Conagra was taken over in 2017, and Big Hearts Pet Brands was acquired in 2015. Other brands that this company has acquired during its course of operations include Rowland Coffee Roasters, Millstone Coffee Company, Knott’’s Berry Farm, Five Roses Flour, etc.
The company won the 2020 Food Engineering Plant of the Year and also the Maltz Heritage Award. J.M. Smucker Company has made it to many of Forbes’s lists. Some of them are America’s Best Employers By State and Best Employers for Women 2020. In the Global 2000 2020, J.M. Smuckers ranked at 1030 overall. It also ranked at number 309 at Best Employers for Diversity 2020. J.M. Smucker shares are listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol “SJM.” The company has around 7000 employees. Smucker’s main income generator is the revenue it earns from pet foods and consumer foods. 95% of the sales for this group comes from the US. Some of the newer brands that are included in the J.M. Smucker family are Rachael Ray Nutrish, Smucker’s Uncrustables, and Café Bustelo.;
