The company's roots trace back to the Compression Rheostat Company founded in 1903. This firm expanded rapidly during the First World War through government-contracted work. It was later renamed as Rockwell International and split into two enterprises – Rockwell Collins and Rockwell Automation, where Rockwell Automation became its legal successor. ROK serves a wide range of industries, such as aerospace, food & beverage, fibre & textiles, life sciences, marine, oil & gas, metals, power generation, mining, print & publishing, chemical, household & personal care, and entertainment, among others. It offers consulting & integration services, digital transformation, industrial analytics, industrial automation and control, industrial cyber security, industrial maintenance and support services, process solutions as well as safety solutions. Rockwell Automation, Inc. also holds a hardware portfolio, which includes drives & motors, input/output (I/O) modules, sensors & switches, human-machine interface, push buttons & signalling devices, to name a few. It also develops software solutions for system design, analytics, IIoT, and plant maintenance, namely DesignSuite, MaintenanceSuite, InnovativeSuite, and OperationSuite. Allen-Bradley, one of Rockwell Automation’s brands, owns the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower, the world’s largest four-faced clock.
Over the years, Rockwell Automation, Inc. acquired a number of companies and expanded its business operations across the globe. Its first-ever merger took place in 1985 when ROK bought-off Robotronics S.A. ROK entered into two mergers in 1995 and acquired Controlware and ICOM Software. In 1999, it purchased Dynapro, Enterprise Technology Group (ETG) as well as EJA Engineering. This trail of acquisitions continued in subsequent years, and the company bought-off Propack Data, SPEL, TESCH GmbH and Samsung Electronics Company Limited’s Controller division. It also acquired Fiix, Inc., ASEM, Avnet, Kalypso, and Oylo in 2020. Rockwell Automation, Inc. ranked 452 on the list of Fortune 500 companies in 2020. It also ranked 1064th on Forbes’ list of Global 2000 2020 companies. Forbes also included ROK in its 2020 rankings of Best Employers for Women, America’s Best Employers By State as well as Just Companies 2020.;
