This company’s history roots back to a London-based tobacconist named Philip Morris. In 1847, Morris opened a single shop in Bond Street and sold cigarettes and tobacco. It was not until 1881 when a proper company was opened by Philip's son, Leopard Morris, and Joseph Grunebum. This company was named Philip Morris & Company and Grunebum Ltd. The company was later renamed and came to be known as Philip Morris & Co. Ltd. in 1885. Later, the Curtis Thompson family took over the company by 1894. Philip Morris International was established just as an operating company under Philip Morris Companies Inc. It shifted its headquarters from New York to Switzerland in 2001, and by 2003, the company officially changed its name to The Altria Group.
In 2008, Philip Morris International formally spun off from Altria and began to operate independently. It trades in both the SIX Swiss Exchange and New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbols “PMI” and “PM”. The company is also a component of both the S&P 500 and S&P 100 indices. It entered the Fortune 500 list in 2009. In 2020, Fortune also awarded it a position in the list of Global 500 companies.;
