About the Company
Plug Power Inc. is an American business that is developing hydrogen fuel cell devices to replace traditional batteries in electrically driven equipment and automobiles. The company's headquarters are in Latham, New York, and it also has offices in Spokane, Washington, and Rochester, New York. DTE Energy and Mechanical Technology Inc. formed Plug Power in 1997 as a cooperative venture. In 2002, the firm went public. Customers such as Nike, BMW, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Mercedes-Benz, Kroger, and Whole Foods were their first viable market. Plug Power's GenDrive technology combines fuel cells made by both Plug Power and Ballard Power Systems, as well as a hydrogen storage system, which allows the system to recharge in minutes rather than many hours as with lead-acid batteries. It enables hydrogen-powered forklifts to operate at constant steady power, as opposed to traditional batteries, which exhibit droop in output at the conclusion of a shift. GenDrive units take up the same amount of space as traditional batteries.;
