An American multinational company that was founded in 1849, Pfizer is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical corporations. The company is known to develop and manufacture vaccines for different sectors. These include immunology, cardiology, oncology, neurology, and endocrinology. The notable products of the company include Lipitor, Lyrica, Diflucan, Zithromax, Viagra, Celebrex, and Prevnar. The company operates through three different business segments; these include Pfizer Pharmaceutical Group (Biopharma), Consumer Healthcare and Upjohn. The Biopharma segment includes different units – inflammation, immunology, hospitals, vaccines, rare diseases, oncology and internal medicines.
In December 2018, the company announced a joint venture with GlaxoSmithKline, a UK pharmaceutical giant. The company grew through various mergers between 2000 and 2010. These include Warner-Lambert in 2000, Wyeth in 2009 and Pharmacia in 2003. The company, in 2015, also attempted to merge with Allergan for $160 billion. However, in April 2016, the company called off the merger after Obama’s administration introduced new laws intending to limit corporate tax inversions. According to a report, in October 2017, the company was undertaking a strategic review of its consumer healthcare division. The possible result of this review would either be a partial or complete separation from the segment. This divestment was supposed to raise around $15 billion. The company also acquired Wilkinson Sword in 1993 and Agouron Pharmaceuticals in 1999. The company also agreed to buy King Pharmaceuticals in October, 2010, for $3.6 billion. Pfizer Incorporation has 90 offices across 59 countries. These include the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Israel, Argentina, India, Belarus, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Bulgaria, China, etc.
The company ranked 9 in the list of America’s Best Employers for New Grads 2020. In the Global 2000 list of 2020, Pfizer sealed the 49th position. It was also ranked 15th in America’s Largest Public Companies 2018. The company also ranked at 15 in Canada’s Best Employers 2020. It ranked at 64 in the Fortune 500 list of companies in 2020. Pfizer shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol “PFE.”;
