About the Company

Oracle was set up by engineers Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates, formerly employees at Ampex Corporation, in 1977. They had read a paper written by Edgar F. Codd about relational databases and saw commercial gains in it. They set up their first company by the name of Software Development Laboratories in Santa Clara, California. In 1982, they changed the name to Oracle Corporation. In 1986, it became a public trading company with a ticker symbol of ORCL on NASDAQ. The company saw its growth expand during this period, and as of 1987, ranked as the world’s largest database management company. In 1989, the company debuted on the S & P 500 index and moved to Redwood Shores, California. In 1995, the company developed a strategy for over the Internet delivery of Oracle software. Oracle provides four significant services. These are Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Software, Cloud Applications, NetSuite, and Industry Applications. Under the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure domain, the company provides services such as Storage, Networking, Analytics, Database Services, Content Management, Integration, Security, Identity, and Compliance. Concerning Software, Oracle owns and provides access to Java, Oracle Database, Linux and MySQL. Under the Cloud Applications domain, Oracle provides services such as Enterprise Resource Planning, Enterprise Performance Management, Supply Chain and Manufacturing, Human Capital Management, and Customer Experience. NetSuite is another product the company offers. Concerning various industry Applications, this company provides services under Communications, Construction and Engineering, Financial Services, Healthcare and Hospitality. Oracle is known for technological innovations and developed the first autonomous database in 2018, which had the capacity to self-tune, self-patch and self-manage. In 2010, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems valued at approximately 7.4 billion USD and made the company a manufacturer of software and hardware. Apart from Sun Microsystems, Oracle has taken over companies like PeopleSoft (2005), Siebel (2006), BEA (2008), and NetSuite(2016). According to the 2019 Vault rankings, Oracle came in second place as the Best Software and Computer Services Company. The company has 1,35,000 employees and owns several firms, like Acme Packet, BEA Systems, Hyperion Corporation, and MICROS Systems. It was a recipient of the prestigious Business Environmental Awards 2018 by Acterra. Other than that, it ranked 94 on Forbes’ Global 2000 2020 and 43 on World’s Best Employers 2020 lists.;
