OKE was founded by Dennis T. Flynn and Charles B. Ames in 1906 as Oklahoma Natural Gas Company (ONG) with an aim to produce and market natural gas, a by-product of oil fields located in the northern part of Oklahoma. H.M. Byllesby, their Chicago-based employer, joined their team and assisted them in establishing the Oklahoma Gas and Electric company. Their main objective was to supply natural gas to Oklahoma City from the Cleveland Oil Field. The Oklahoma Natural Gas Company constructed a natural gas pipeline which connected Osage fields to Oklahoma City; it became functional from December 1907. In December 1980, the ONG board voted to recognise the ONG as a holding company and renamed it ONEOK, Inc. Following this decision, ONG became one of the leading subsidiaries of OKE. Some of the other subsidiaries of ONEOK include ONOK Services Co, Northern Border Pipeline Corporation, Bear Paw Energy LLC, Viking Gas Transmission Co, Midwestern Gas Transmission Co, OkTex Pipeline Co, Oneok Foundation, Inc. In 2017, OKE was named one of the “Best Companies to Work For” by Oklahoma Magazine. A year later, it was ranked 255th on Forbes’ list of America’s Largest Public Companies. Moreover, in 2020, it occupied the 313th position on the list of Fortune 500 companies.;
