Headquartered in Thomasville, North Carolina, Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. is a union-free motor carrier engaged in the provision of national, inter-regional and regional less than truckload services. Besides providing LTL services, the company also offers ground and air expedited shipments, transportation management, consumer household pickup, delivery, supply chain consultations, freight delivery truckload brokerage, warehousing and container delivery services. Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. shares are traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol “ODFL”.
Founded by Earl and Lillian Congdon in 1934, ODFL operated only one truck at the very beginning; it used to run a 94-mile route in Virginia. ODFL has more than 40,000 trailers and tractors and carries out its operations through more than 240 service centres. ODFL’s operations are categorised into the following segments: Expedited, Domestic, Household Services, Global and People. The Global division offers less-than-container load, full-container-load services to various locations all around the world. Some of the destinations include Europe, Central America, South America, Far East and the Caribbean. In 1957, ODFL expanded its operations to some of the most major markets in the southern part of Virginia and North Carolina. In 1962, ODFL acquired a furniture mover based in High Point, North Carolina.
Between 1969 and 1979, the company completed several acquisitions which involved some of its competitors. In 1980, ODFL expanded its operations to various states in America which included Florida, Tennessee and California. Moreover, it also started providing its services to the major markets of Dallas and Chicago. In 1991, an initial public offering was made, and ODFL became a public company. Six years later, David Congdon became the president and COO of Old Dominion Freight Line.
ODFL is a member of the SmartWay Transport Partnership; it is a collaboration of various carriers, freight shippers and logistic companies who aim to achieve increased fuel efficiency and reduce the harmful emissions from transport. They use various technologies such as automatic tyre inflation, wide-based tyres, improved aerodynamics and improved freight logistics. In 2013, ODFL was ranked 74th on Fortune’s list of the “100 Fastest-Growing Companies”. In 2015, NASSTRAC named the company as Carrier of the Year for the third year in a row. In the same year, it was included in the list of the 100 Great Supply Chain Partners list by SupplyChainBrain. It occupied the 481st position on Forbes “America’s Best Employers” 2019 List. Moreover, in 2020, ODFL was ranked 1364th on Forbes Global 2000 list.;
