Through NRG, another brand of NRG Energy, Inc. the residential segment provides residential electricity and natural gas plans in the Northeast. Also, this segment includes products like GoalZero (portable solar products) and NRG Go Stations (charging kiosks).
Under the business segment, NRG Energy, Inc. provides Commercial energy plans, Distributed energy solutions, Energy advisory services, O&M (Operation and Management) and Repair services.
The generation fleet of this company is located as per their customer base i.e in the ERCOT (Texas) and PJM (Northeast) markets. NRG Energy, Inc. was founded in 1989 by Seth Allen and is incorporated in Delaware. It was previously a wholesale unit of Northern States Power Company but started to continue its business independently from the year 2000.

In the 2000s, the company acquired a number of companies, including Dynegy (2005), Reliant Energy (2009), and Green Mountain Energy (2010). In the 2010s, the company acquired GenOn Energy (2012), Goal Zero (2014), XOOM Energy (2018). The latest inclusion of this company was confirmed by the acquisition of Direct Energy on August 20, 2020, for $3.625 billion (the deal was expected to be finished by the end of 2020). Among the 18 acquisitions of this company, the largest acquisition occurred in 2005 when it purchased Texas Genco Holdings for a price of $5.8 billion..
