About the Company

Microsoft Corporation is a multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, United States. It was established in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen with Gates as its CEO. The company was officially incorporated in 1981 and went public in 1986. Microsoft Corporation shares trade on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol of MSFT. MSFT shares are also included as a component by several stock market indices, namely S&P 500, S&P 100, NASDAQ-100 and DJIA. Its corporate name, Microsoft, is a portmanteau of ‘microcomputer software’. The company develops, manufactures, licenses, markets and sells a variety of products, such as computer software, personal computers, consumer electronics, mobile applications, as well as cybersecurity solutions. Some of its renowned products are Microsoft Office suite, Edge web browsers, Microsoft Visual Studio, Internet Explorer, Xbox, and Windows operating systems. Microsoft launched its first version of Windows in 1985 and released Windows 95 in the year 1995. MSFT expanded its product portfolio over the years through a series of acquisitions. Its first merger took place in 1987 when Microsoft bought-off Forethought, the developer of a presentation program which would later become Microsoft PowerPoint. In 1997, MSFT purchased Hotmail.com in its largest acquisition at the time for $500 million. It entered into another major merger in 2000 and bought-off Visio Corporation, a software company, for $1.375 billion and integrated Microsoft Vision in its product line. In 2002, the company acquired Navision for $1.33 billion and developed the technology for its software solutions which would later become Microsoft Dynamics. MSFT bought-off Skype Technologies in a key acquisition in 2011 for a purchase price of $8.5 billion. In 2014, Microsoft acquired Nokia’s smartphone and tablet businesses in a transaction of $7.2 billion. Subsequently, MSFT transferred Nokia’s line of Lumia smartphones under its portfolio. That same year, it also purchased Minecraft, a popular video game, in a transaction of $2.5 billion. It bought-off LinkedIn, a professional networking platform, for $26.2 billion in 2016. As of 2021, Microsoft’s latest acquisition took place in 2020 when it purchased ZeniMax Media, the creator of best-selling gaming franchises. MSFT operates across the globe including Canada, US, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Iceland, Kuwait, South Korea, Japan, India, Singapore, Egypt, Bhutan, Spain, Thailand, UAE, UK, Pakistan, Denmark, China, Ireland, Czech Republic, Mexico, Qatar and New Zealand, among several others. It ranked 21st on the list of Fortune 500 companies. Microsoft Corporation also ranked 13th on Forbes’ list of Global 2000 2020 companies. Forbes also included MSFT in its 2020 rankings of Best Employers for Women, Best Employers for Diversity World’s Best Employers, Best Employers for Veterans, Best Management Consulting Firms, World’s Most Valuable Brands, as well as Just Companies 2021.;
