MSCI Inc. is an American finance company and a global provider of financial services. It was established in the year 1969 when Morgan Stanley purchased the licensing rights to Capital International data. The company went public through an initial public offering in 2007, and its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol of MSCI. MSCI shares are also included as a component on the S&P 500 stock market index.
The company has a range of financial services, which includes tools for analytics, risk management, factor investing, ESG investing, portfolio analysis and management, and real estate investment. It also publishes a number of market indices, such as MSCI World Index, MSCI BRIC Index and MSCI EAFE Index. The company is best known for its stock benchmark indexes such as the MSCI Frontier Market Index, MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI), MSCI EAFE Index and MSCI Emerging Market Index. It also launches new indices every year. MSCI’s clientele includes asset owners, asset managers, wealth managers as well as banks. Over the years, MSCI has acquired several companies and expanded its business operations. It bought-off Barra, a firm engaged in risk management and portfolio analytics, for a purchase price of $816.4 million. This was a key merger in the company’s history which led to the incorporation of a new firm – MSCI Barra, which was later spun-off in 2007. It bought-off RiskMetrics in 2010 in a transaction of $1.55 billion. Subsequently, in 2013 MSCI purchased InvestorForce Holdings, Inc., for an undisclosed sum. In 2019, MSCI acquired Carbon Delta AG, an environmental data analytics and fintech firm in Zurich, to strengthen its analysis of climate change as well as its risks and impact on investment.
In 2020, MSCI received the award for Best Climate Index Provider of the Year by Environmental Finance. GlobalCapital recognised the company as the Index Product Creator and Developer of the Year. As of 2021, the company operates in numerous countries across the globe, such as France, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Singapore, Philippines, India, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Japan and South Korea, among others. It ranked 1304th on Forbes’ list of Global 2000 2020 companies.;
