The present MS came into existence when the firm merged with Dean Witter Discover & Co., Sears Roebuck’s spin-off financial services business. The company was now named “Morgan Stanely Dean Witter Discover & Co.”, but it was soon changed to ‘Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co.’ in 1998. Finally, in 2001 the company went back to its previous name Morgan Stanley'. Over the years it acquired companies like Citigroup’s Smith Barney in 2009, E-Trade and Eaton Vance in 2020.
