About the Company
Founded in 1889, McCormick & Company is an enterprise that manufactures, distributes and markets condiments, seasoning mixes, spices, and other flavouring products globally. Its primary clientele includes restaurants, industrial, home and institutional markets. As of 2020, the company has a workforce of more than 12,400 employees serving around 150 countries worldwide. The top 10 packaged food & beverage companies and almost every foodservice restaurant chains in the United States work with it. It has 18 operations in total, 16 of which are located within North America. The other two offices are in Gurgaon, India and Avignon, France.
It owns over 30 brands such as Silvo, Old Bay, Aeroplane, Cattlemen’s BBQ Sauce, Durcos, FONA, Giotti, Thai Kitchen, Wuhan Asia-Pacific Condiments, Cholula Hot Sauce, Billy Bee, Gourmet Garden, McCormick China, McCormick Pasion por el Sabor, etc. The company also offers flavour solutions and have developed flavours for numerous established companies. It creates flavours for meals, cereals, snack bars, confectionery, cracker & snacks, beverages & dairy, and sweet bakery. The company also uses its research and development team to create new flavours under a flavour solution category ‘Innovation’.
The company began its journey when founder Willoughby M. McCormick and his three workers opened a company in a cellar in 1889. Back then they would sell its extracts and flavours door to door. Some of its early products were fruit syrups, root beer, juices and flavouring extracts. It was in 1896 when McCormick acquired F.G Emmett Spice Company that it started marketing spices.
Over the years, it has acquired other companies to expand its reach and business. Some of these institutions are A. Schilling & Company in 1947, Ben-Hur Products in 1953, Gorman Eckert & Co. Ltd. in 1959, Gilroy Foods in 1961, Baker Extract Co. in 1962, Children Foods in 1968, All Portions in 1975, Setco in 1981, Grupo Pesa in 1994, Durco in 2000, UniqSauce in 2003, Lawry’s in 2008, Kitchen Basics in 2001, Wuhan Asia-Pacific Condiments Co. Ltd. in 2013, Enrico Giotti SpA in 2016, etc. Apart from these, as of 2019, the company is also working with IBM to develop Artificial Intelligence to analyse its data and develop new seasoning mixes and flavour combinations digitally.
The company has been a part of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index since 2013. It trades in the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MKC shares. In the same year, Forbes recognised it in three of its awarding lists, namely Best Employers for Diversity 2020, America’s Best Employer by State and Global 2000. Two other lists that it entered in 2020 are Top 50 Companies for Philanthropy by Diversity Inc. and Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable companies.;
