About the Company

Metlife, Inc. is a holding company engaged in financial services. It is one of the world’s largest providers of annuities, employee benefit programs, and insurance policies. Established in 1868, Metlife, Inc. traces its corporate roots to the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. It is headquartered in New York City, United States. Metlife shares started trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) through an initial public offering in 2000 under the ticker symbol of MET. MET shares are a part of the S&P 500 as well as the S&P 100 stock market indexes. The company has a global presence and operates in more than 40 countries, including the UAE, Qatar, United Kingdom, Romania, France, Greece, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Malaysia, Lebanon, Nepal, South Korea, India, Australia, Bangladesh, Mexico, Columbia, Brazil and Argentina. It offers insurance and retirement policies to individuals as well as investment management services to businesses. The company also holds the naming rights of the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, United States. Metlife, Inc. operates through a number of subsidiaries and affiliate companies, such as Metlife Insurance Brokerage, Inc., Hyatt Legal Plans, Inc., Metlife Health Plans, Inc., Economy Fire & Casualty Company, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Safeguard Health Plans, Inc. and Enterprise General Insurance Agency, Inc., among others. Over the years, it has acquired several companies and expanded its business profile. It merged with United Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1992. Another major merger took place in 1999 when Metlife bought-off GenAmerica Corporation and its subsidiaries in a $1.2 billion transaction. In 2001, MET purchased Kingston’s Grand Bank for an undisclosed sum. This trail of acquisitions continued in 2005 when it bought-off Citigroup’s international insurance businesses for an $11.8 billion purchase price. With this acquisition, Metlife, Inc. became one of the largest individual life insurers in North America. As of 2021, Metlife, Inc. ranked 48th on the list of Fortune 500 companies. It ranked 80th on Forbes’ list of Global 2000 2020 companies. Forbes also included MET in lists of World’s Best Employers 2020, America’s Best Employers By State 2020, America’s Best Insurance Firms 2021 as well as Just Companies 2021.;
