Beyster was the Accelerator Physics Department of General Atomics’ chairman in 1957. He started the company in San Diego, California by selling shares of General Atomics that he owned along with investments from previous employees. It is headquartered at Reston, Virginia. It works closely with Homeland security, NSA, the U.S. Department of Defence, Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Aviation Administration and other civil agencies.

In total, this company has made two acquisitions. Leidos Holdings made its first acquisition on 17th December 2019, acquiring Dynetics for $1.7 billion. Subsequently, on 10th December, 2020, it acquired the 1901 Group for $215 million. It has also landed a contract of $1.76 billion for modernising the National Airspace System. It merged with the IT department of Lockheed Martin for Information Systems & Global Solutions business in 2016. This merger created the largest IT service provider in the Defence Industry.
