About the Company

Nordstrom, Inc., popularly known as Nordstrom, is a Seattle-based luxury department store chain. As of Jan 2021, the company has about 100 stores spread across 40 different states and 3 provinces of the US and Canada, respectively with over 75,000 employees working for it. The company currently has five subsidiaries under its umbrella, namely Trunk Club, Nordstrom Rack, Jeffrey, Nordstrom Canada, and HauteLook. The company also offers services through Nordstrom Restaurants, The Nordy Club, Spa Nordstrom, Gift Card, Alteration & Tailoring and Stylists. However, its primary business remains selling clothing, self-care, cosmetics, accessories, fragrances, and household items to the American population. It also offers ‘Nordstorm Credit Card’ to its customers for extra added benefits and loyalty rewards. It offers clothing from popular brands such as Gucci, Nike, Birkenstocks, Tory Brunch, Madewell, Topshop, Free People, UGG, SPANX, Barefoot Dreams, etc. The company has also created several brands of its own, like BP., Zella, Treasure & Bond, Caslon, Nordstrom, Tucker + Tate, Rachel Parcell, Halogen, Chelsea and Leith. Apart from these, Nordstrom outlets provide items from a vast range of brands, catering to almost every individual’s need. It was founded as early in 1901 as a shoe store named Wallin & Nordstrom by Carl F. Wallin and John Nordstrom. After 27 years, John gave his shares to two of his sons, Elmer and Everett, following which Carl too sold his part to them. The company began to expand, and by 1963 it started to offer Best Apparel and changed its name to Nordstrom Best. The company continued to widen its reach and opened stores in different states in the USA. In 1976, it opened a chain of stores under the name Place Two where it provides a limited selection of clothing in relatively smaller markets. It was not until 1995 that Nordstrom opened an outlet in New York, which also marked the beginning of its fourth generation ownership. From 2010, it began to acquire significant companies such as HauteLook in February 2011 and Trunk Club in 2014. Since 2015, the company also has stores located in Canada and Puerto Rico. The company began publicly trading in 1980 and got listed in the NASDAQ stock exchange. However, in 1999, it moved to the New York Stock Exchange and started trading under the ticker symbol JWN. It ranked 205th on the Fortune 500 and made it into the Fortune World’s Most Admired Companies list in 2020. Forbes also recognised the company in six of its 2020 lists such as Global 2000, Best Employers for New Grads, etc. In 2021, Nordstrom got enlisted as one of the Forbes Just Companies.;
