JNPR was founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu, a scientist who took the initiative to develop data packet-based routers that were specifically engineered for packet-switching. He started operations of JNPR with a $2 million funding and later that year raised an additional $12 million. Previously, JNPR only focused on selling core routers, primarily used by internet service providers (ISPs). However, it gradually expanded its operations and now develops edge routers, wireless networking and aggregation devices.
In 2000, Juniper Networks entered into a joint venture agreement with Ericsson to manufacture and market network switches for mobile devices. Its products now cater to the requirements of national governments, cloud solution providers, research organisations and the public sector. Some of its most notable subsidiaries include Netrounds AB, Mist Systems, Inc., Cyphort Inc., Mykonos Software Inc., and HTBASE. JNPR specifically targets software and information technology industries.
Since its inception, JNPR has successfully acquired over 25 companies, which are based in 5 different American states and four countries. After 2001, JNPR made several acquisitions which included companies, such as Unisphere Networks and Pacific Broadband. In 2004, JNPR completed its largest acquisition when it acquired NetScreen Technologies for approximately $4 billion. A year later, it acquired 5 companies; as per reports, the value of the acquisitions ranged between $8.5 million and $340 million.
After 2010, JNPR acquired two digital video companies and a wireless LAN software company. Four years later, it completed the acquisition of WANDL, a software-defined networking company, now headquartered in Piscataway, New Jersey.
