Headquartered in Cork, Ireland Johnson Controls International plc is an American-Irish diversified technology company, providing building products, energy solutions, and next-gen transport systems. The company employs over 100,000 employees as of January 2021 and operates in more than 2,000 locations, which are spread across 150 countries. Johnson Controls International plc shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol "JCI".
JCI was formed following the merger of Johnson Controls and Tyco International in January 2016. The merger was worth approximately $16.5 billion. Some of the company's primary subsidiaries include Becker Group, Apple Container Corp, Hyperion Corp, and Hoover Universal Inc. Johnson Controls has acquired more than 20 companies, out of which 4 involved private-equity firms. In 2005, JCI completed one of its largest acquisitions – York International for $3.2 billion.
Johnson Controls International announced its largest sale in 2008 when it sold its power solutions business to Brookfield Private Equity for $13.2 billion. JCI has made acquisitions in over 8 states across more than 7 countries. It mainly targets the automotive and engineering sectors. Its operations are segregated into two main units – building efficiency and global workplace solutions. Some of the brands included in the first unit include York, Metasys, and Frick. This unit of JCI is responsible for retrofitting the Empire State Building. Moreover, it also secured the Burj Khalifa contract for the installation of a security management system in the building.
The second unit engages in the provision of outsourced facilities management services worldwide. Moreover, it is responsible for managing corporate real estate for its clients, which include replacement of equipment, acquisition of property, and more.
In 1995, Johnson Controls invested somewhere between $175 and $200 million for 5% interest in Roth Freres. Next year, it paid approximately $1.35 billion to acquire the Prince Automotive Unit belonging of Prince Holding Corporation. This was the largest acquisition of Johnson Controls before its merger with Tyco International. In 1997, it signed a joint venture with Amara Raja batteries to manufacture automotive batteries. The operations were carried out under the brand name "Amaron".
In May 2019, JCI received three prestigious awards from Energy Manager Today and Environmental Leader (EMT) at the ELEMCON. It managed to be a recipient of the Top Project Judges' Choice Award and the Environmental Leader Project of the Year Award. In 2020, Johnson Controls International plc was ranked 439th on the list of Fortune 500 companies.;
