Hanesbrands Inc. is a Winston-Salem, North Carolina based multinational clothing company. As of 2020, it is the largest marketer of basic apparel in the world with a workforce of about 63,000 employees. Almost 90% of the United States’ households use products manufactured by this company. It markets its brands across Australia, Asia, South Africa, the Americas and Europe.
The company mainly sells panties, sheer hosiery, bras, men’s underwear, shapewear, socks, children’s underwear, fleece, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other activewear apparel. It has brands like Hanes, Bali, Maidenform, Wonderbra, Playtex, Champion, JMS or Just My Size and Gear for Sports. The company also supplies certain brands outside the US, namely Shock Absorber, DIM, Ritmo, Zorba, Nur Die/Nur Der, Sol y Oro, Lovable, Track N Field and Abanderado.
Founded in 2006, Hanesbrands has revolutionised several basic apparels such as the Tagless underwear, t-shirt and stretch-cup t-shirt bra. It was also the company that invented sports bras, and as of 2020, is working on creating Smart Size Bras. It was recognised for its work towards the betterment of the environment including “green” building. It is also known for its philanthropic work such as supporting schools in Honduras.
In 2013, it made its first important acquisition when it took over the brand Maidenform for $575 million. Following this, it acquired Pacific brands, an Australia-based underwear and clothing company. Its last significant acquisition was Norcross in 2017, an alternative apparel brand based in Georgia for $60 million.
The company is a component in the S&P 500 index, and trades under the ticker symbol HBI in the New York Stock Exchange. In the same year, it entered Fortune’s 500 lists, and as of 2020, it is the 436th company under it. It was a part of the Forbes Global 2000 in 2019 but dropped in 2020.;
