Gap Inc. (stylised as GAP) is an American international clothing and accessories retailer. It was founded in 1969. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol of GPS. GPS stocks are also included as a component on the S&P 500 index.
GAP opened its first store on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco in 1969, which catered primarily to a teenage customer base. At this point, it did not sell merchandise under its brand label, and its inventory consisted of Levi’s and LP records. Its second store was launched in San Jose in 1970. By 1973, the company expanded across the United States with over 25 stores. By 1974, the company had assumed an upscale identity, revamping its business and selling private-label merchandise.
As of 2020, GAP stood as one of the largest retailers in the United States. It sold products worldwide in over 3,000 company-owned stores, 600 franchise stores and e-commerce sites. The company operates internationally in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Italy, Canada, France, China, Japan, India, and Taiwan, among several other countries. Its most targeted sectors include apparel/textiles and accessories. It also offers fitness and lifestyle products for sports, yoga, training, travel and other daily activities. It operates through six primary divisions: Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta, Intermix, Hill City, Janie and Jack and Gap (its namesake banner). In 2008, Gap Inc. acquired Athleta in a $150 million deal.
In 2020, Gap Inc. ranked 199th on the list of Fortune 500 companies. It ranked 1608th on Forbes’ list of Global 2000 companies. Forbes also included GAP in its lists of America’s Best Employers By State, Best Employers for Women, Best Employer’s for Diversity and World’s Best Employers.;
