Corning Inc. is one of the leading material science innovators in the world. It is a multinational technology company with expertise in ceramic, glass and related technologies and materials including optics. As of 2020, it has over 49,500 employees working under its five business segments, namely speciality materials, life science, optical communications, display technology and environmental technologies. It has also delved into Automotive and Mobile Consumer Electronics industries as well.
The company was founded in 1851 under the name Bay State Glass Co. that later changed to Brooklyn Flint Glass Works when it moved to Brooklyn. Finally, in 1868 it moved to its current headquarter and namesake Corning, New York. It has a rich history in terms of science-based innovations over the years and developed products like Chemcor, Vycor, Pyrex, CorningWare Pyroceram, Corelle etc. In its history of over 160 years, it invented a process of producing light bulbs rapidly, at a lower cost. In fact, they are the developers of the historical light bulb of Thomas Edison. It is also the manufacturer of the infamous Gorilla glass that has been used by almost every mobile manufacturer as of 2020.
In 2011, it acquired an Israeli distributed antenna system developing company called MobileAccess Networks that later became a part of Corning’s telecommunications business unit. SpiderCloud Wireless was acquired by Corning in July 2017. The company trades in the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GLW and is an S&P 500 component as well. It has been an old member of the Fortune 500 list, and as of 2020, ranks 277th under it. Forbes has also recognized Corning and included it in three of its 2020 lists, namely, America’s Best Employers By State, Global 2000 and World’s Best Employers.;
