Headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota General Mills Inc. is a multinational marketer and manufacturer of branded consumer foods that are sold via retail stores. With a workforce of over 40,000 employees, it is also nicknamed Big G by many. Its portfolio includes over 100 top brands from the United States and several category leaders from across the globe. Some of these brands include Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Cheerios, Annie’s Homegrown, Colombo, Cocoa Puffs, Trix, Totino’s, Old El Paso, etc. The company offers products like grain snacks, organic food, breakfast cereals, meal products, baking goods, and many more.
General Mills was founded in 1928, but its origin dates back to 1856 when Robert Smith founded Minneapolis Milling Company. It was then acquired by Cadwallader C. Washburn that later entered a partnership with John Crosby in 1877. A new Washburn-Crosby Company was formed that acquired WLAG and renamed it WCCO. Big G came into existence in June 1928 when Washburn-Crosby merged with three other mills.
Its first significant acquisition was Elevator Company and Wichita Mill in 1928. Over the next few years, it had acquired Red Lobster in the 1970s, Good Earth, Talbots, and Eddie Bauer in the 1980s. During the span of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, it focused on sponsoring shows like The Lone Ranger, Rocky, and His Friends, and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. From 2000 to 2020, it has acquired several businesses like Small Planet Foods in 2000, Pillsbury in 2001, Annie’s Inc. in 2014, Epic Provisions in 2016, Blue Buffalo Pet Products, Inc. in 2018, etc.
The company is an S&P 500 company that trades under the symbol GIS on the New York Stock Exchange. It is the 192nd company in the 2020 Fortune 500 list, and Fortune has also recognised Big G in its World’s Most Admired Companies 2020 list. It also made it into 5 Forbes 2020 lists like Best Employers For Women, Global 2000, Canada’s Best Employers, World’s Best Employers, etc.;
