Entergy Corporation is an energy company that engages in electric power production and retail distribution. Its corporate roots can be traced back to the Arkansas Power Company, which was established in 1913. In subsequent years, this company integrated with several others and formed a new holding company named Middle South Utilities. In 1989, Middle South Utilities changed its name to Entergy. Entergy made a notable acquisition when it bought-off Gulf States Utilities in a transaction of $2.3 billion in 1994.
The company is headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Entergy Corp shares trade in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol of ETR. It is also an S&P 500 company with ETR stocks as a component on this index. As of 2020, Entergy operates through two business segments, namely Utility Operations and Entergy Wholesale Commodities. Its Utility Operations offer low-emission, reliable energy in four service territories that cover Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. ETR also has distribution businesses of natural gas in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Entergy Wholesale Commodities owns several nuclear and non-nuclear power plants across the United States. Its nuclear fleet consists of eight nuclear power plants. These units are located in Arkansas, New York, Mississippi, Michigan, Louisiana and Nebraska. It operates through several utility corporations, namely Entergy New Orleans, LLC; Entergy Texas, Inc.; Entergy Mississippi, LLC; Entergy Arkansas, LLC and Entergy Louisiana, LLC.
In 2019, Entergy Corporation was included on the list of Fortune 500 companies for the 25th consecutive year. As of 2020, it ranked 293rd on this list. Forbes included ETR in its list of Global 2000 companies, wherein it ranks 506th. Forbes also recognised Entergy as one of America’s Best Employers By State. It was one of the 58 companies in the United States to receive the HIRE Vets Medallion Award by the US Department of Labour. ETR was named as one the Top electric utilities in economic development by Site Selection Magazine for the 13th consecutive year. Entergy New Orleans received the 2020 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award by the US Department of Energy.;
