The history of this company dates back to the year 1990 when it was founded under the name of Catawba Power company with an ambitious plan of constructing a series of hydroelectric power plants to drive the economic growth of the Piedmont Carolinas. In 1997, following the deregulation of the natural gas industry, Duke Power collaborated with Pan Energy to counter the challenges of a new gas generation technology. Since then it came to be known as Duke Energy. Under further collaboration with noted companies like Cinergy Corporation, Progress Energy and Piedmont Natural gas in the 21st century, Duke Energy currently serves 7. 7 million electric customers in 6 states of the US and about 1.4 million natural gas customers in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Carolinas.
