Dollar Tree, Inc. is a popular discount variety store chain that offers products for less than $1. Previously known as Only $1.00, it has its headquarters in Chesapeake, Virginia in the USA. The company employs over 1,90,000 associates and operates more than 15,000 stores across 48 states in the country. It also operates in five Canadian Provinces.
Its operations are supported by an efficient logistics system which includes over 20 distribution centres. Dollar Tree stores sell a wide range of products encompassing, gifts, stationery, toys, candies, dinnerware and more. Few of the stores also have food items like eggs, pizza, etc. Since 2012, all the stores across the country have started accepting manufacturer’s coupons.
In 1993, the company changed its name from to Only $1 to Dollar Tree Stores so that it could adopt a strategy with multiple price points in the future. Also, in the same year, part of its equity interest was sold to a private equity firm – SKM Partners.
It was listed on NASDAQ in 1995 at $15 per share. At that time, its market capitalisation was calculated at $225 million. Dollar Tree, Inc. shares are traded on NASDAQ under the ticker “DLTR”.
A year later, DLTR acquired a chain based in Chicago named Dollar Bill$, which operated 136 stores in various locations. In 2010, it acquired 86 Dollar Giant stores in Vancouver. Dollar Tree also opened its 400th chain store in the same year. In 2011, DLTR generated total revenue of approximately $6.63 billion and subsequently opened 278 new stores.
It also expanded its distribution centre to Savanna, Georgia. In 2014, the company announced its acquisition of Family Dollar for an estimated $8.5 billion.
