Headquartered in Burbank, California, Disney, also known as The Walt Disney Company, is a multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate. It has its operations running in almost every part of the world with a workforce of more than 223,000 employees.
The company was established by Walter Elias Disney, famously known as Walt Disney, in 1923 when he signed a contract to produce Alice Comedies with M.J. Winkler. The first name that it bore was Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. After five years from that Mickey Mouse debuted in Steamboat Willie, which was also the first animated film to have synchronized sound. By 1929, the partnership broke into four companies namely Disney Film Recording Company; Walt Disney Production Ltd; Liked Realty and Investment Company, and the Walt Disney Enterprise.
In 1932, it won its first Academy Award for the first full-coloured cartoon called Flowers and Trees. Its first feature-length film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarf premiered in 1937, and within three years, the company moved to its current Headquarter in Burbank. In the 1950s, it released its first live-action movie, Treasure Island; first television show, One Hour in Wonderland; established WED enterprise; and opened the first Disneyland. It achieved a new milestone after releasing ‘Mary Poppins’ in 1964. Disney went ahead and created a handful of more historical moments such as opening Walt Disney World in 1971, opening Epcot in 1982, starting the first international Disneyland in Tokyo and introduced The Disney Channel in 1983.
In 1986, it changed its name to The Walt Disney Company from Walt Disney Productions and marked the beginning of its modern era. It then opened its first shop the next year in Glendale, California. From 1996-2020, Disney had acquired some of the biggest names from the entertainment industry such as Capital Cities/ABC in 1996, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Fox in 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2019 respectively.
As of 2020, it owns six media networks, that are ABC, National Geographic, Disney Channel, FX and ESPN. The company also owns 13 experiences, Disney parks and products like Aulani, Hong Kong Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney Stores etc. Disney also has eleven Entertainment studios under it namely Marvel Studios, Disney Nature, Searchlight Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studio etc. It is the 49th company in the 2020 Fortune 500 list and is also a part of its 2020 Global 500 list. It is an S&P 500 as well as the S&P 100 component and trades in the New York Stock Exchange under DIS as its ticker symbol.
