It was founded in 1984 as Family Hospital Physician Associates, and in 1997 was renamed to Centene Corporation, its current brand name. In its journey of more than three decades, it has acquired several businesses and companies. Some of its notable acquisitions include Cenpatico in 2003, Opticare, US Script, Cardium and an additional nurse triage service in 2006, Celtic Group Inc. in 2008, Health Plans in Ohio and Michigan in 2015 and Health Net in 2016.
