About the Company

Founded in 1886, CMS Energy is a company engaged in the energy sector, headquartered in Jackson, Michigan. It primarily focuses on the unitality operations in Michigan, and its main business is a public utility one offering natural gas and electricity under consumer energy. As of 2020, it has more than 8,400 employees working to provide energy resources to the residents of Michigan. It also has non-utility related businesses that focus on regional independent power production. The company got listed in the New York Stock Exchange on 23rd October 1987 under the ticker symbol CMS. CMS is listed under the Fortune 500 list and has been a part of it for more than 24 years as of 2020. It has also been in the S&P 500 list since 3rd May 1999. Its origin stretches to when Samuel Jarvis and William Augustine Foote approached the officials in Jackson, Michigan to support them in their endeavour of illuminating Jackson’s downtown with the help of electric arc lights. By 1888, Jackson Electric Light Works was formed, and in 1889 it built a hydro plant project on the Kalamazoo River. With some gradual success, Foote formed Commonwealth Power Company by consolidating his small power companies. In 1907, Foote and Jarvis made history by building the world’s first project that could transmit 110,000 volts electricity called the Croton Hydro project. In the next ten years, it built several natural gas, electric, coal-field and nuclear facilities. It was also the first company to build a power plant in Michigan in 1961 called the Big Rock Point in Charlevoix. Over the next few years, the company rebranded itself from Consumers Power to Consumers Energy in 1997, entered into an agreement for oil exploration in Red Seas’ Diamond Block with Eritrea and changed its headquarter to One Energy Plaza in Jackson in 2003. It also went on to win recognition from many respected organisations. In both 2014 and 2015, the company was named Energy Star Partner of the Year, it also acquired a place in the list of 15 topmost Most Sustainable Energy Providers in 2014.;
