About the Company

Headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, Caterpillar Inc. is a public corporation that manufactures, distributes, designs and develops engines, machinery, insurances and financial products for its customers. It is a part of both the Fortune 500 list and Fortune Global 500 list as of 2020. It is popularly known as CAT in the market and has over 500 operations and dealer locations spread across the world. CAT has its operations running in 25 different countries like Brazil, China, France, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates etc. The company manufactures at least 300 different types of machines distributed by dealers in more than 180 countries. The company offers its products under five distinct categories that are new products, used equipment, parts, shop merchandise and rental equipment. CAT has 20 brands under its umbrella namely CAT Lift Trucks, CAT Financial, FG Wilson, Perkins, MAK, CAT Reman, MWM, Anchor, Hindustan, Olympian, CAT Rental Store, M2M, Progress Rail, Yellowmark, ASIATRAK, Hypac, Turner Powertrain System, Kemper, Solar Turbines and SEM. It also has a flagship brand called “Cat” that offers products and services to those served by its independently-owned global dealer network. Though it was established in 1925, its origin dates back to 1890 when its founder Benjamin Holt created a tractor to help the framers work for a longer time. Since then Holt kept innovating and improving his creations to support the “Caterpillar” farmers. The term was patented by Holt in 1911, almost 14 years before the advent of this company. In its journey, it has acquired and merged with several businesses and companies to expand its reach and customer base. Through 1951-2000 it has undertaken 12 acquisitions, among which some notable ones are Solar Division and Turbomach Division from International Harvester Company in 1981, Perkins Engines from LucasVarity in 1998 and Hindustan Motors Ltd.’s Earthmoving Equipment Division in 2000. Between 2001 and 2020, it acquired over 26 more businesses from companies around the world. The most recent few among them include Marble Robot, Inc. in 2020, Berg Propulsion in 2013 and Pyroban Group Ltd in 2011. It is a component under both the S&P 100 and S&P 500 indices, and trades in the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CAT.;
