Boston Scientific Corporation, also known simply as Boston Scientific, is a manufacturer of medical devices, headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts. As of 2019, the company held a workforce of approximately 36,000 employees in 30 different locations across the world. It has operations running in countries like Japan, India, France, Poland, Turkey, Ireland, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, etc.
It possesses medical specialities of 15 different types, such as Female Pelvic Medicine, Interventional Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Gastroenterology, Pain Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Interventional Cardiology etc. The company also offers medical solutions through its Gastroenterology Resources, Cardiovascular Resources and Health Equity Initiative.
Boston Scientific offers ten types of patented implant devices such as Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) Devices, LOTUS Edge Aortic Valve System, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Systems, Pacemakers, WATCHMAN Implant etc. Some of its featured products are CRT-D, Remote Patient Monitoring and Diagnostic Monitoring, Defibrillators (ICD), Stents: Coronary and Left Atrial Appendage Closure and such.
The company was founded in 1979 and by 2020 had ventured into more than 40 company portfolios, active across four continents. In June 2004 the company made its first major acquisition and bought Advanced Bionics Corporation for $740 million. Since then, it has acquired several notable businesses in the field of medicine such as TriVascular, Inc. and CryoVascular Systems, Inc. along with its proprietary angioplasty device in 2005. In 2006 the company acquired its longtime competitor Guidant at $27.2 billion and the split with Abbott laboratories.
Between 2007-2019 the company continued to acquire more and more businesses and expand its capabilities and services. Some of its significant acquisitions were Cameron Health in 2012 for $1.3 billion, American Medical Systems urology business of Endo International Plc in 2015 for $1.6 billion and in 2018 bought BTG Plc at a price of $4.2 billion.
The company went public on May 19th 1992 and traded via the New York Stock exchange under the ticker symbol BSX share.
Over the years it has received several awards and recognitions like Forbes’ one of America's Most Just Companies 2020 and Human Rights Campaign’s one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality for five years in a row till 2020.;
