Booking Holdings Inc. is a Norwalk, Connecticut based company that owns and operates multiple travel fare meta-search engines and travel fare aggregators. As of 2020, the company operates in over 220 countries worldwide and in more than 40 languages. It has more than 29 million listings of hotels, apartments, homes and other residential spaces across the world. Booking Holdings boasts of a workforce of around 26,400 employees of more than 140 different nationalities as of 2019. It holds seven brand headquarters and over 300 operating offices around the globe.
The company’s journey began in 1997 when Priceline founder Jay S. Walker launched a website with the same name. Within two years it went public and started trading in NASDAQ under the symbol PLCN. In 2004, Priceline underwent its first substantial acquisition and purchased ActiveHotels.com. Between 2005 and 2019, it acquired 11 more businesses, among which the most important ones are booking.com in 2005, agoda.com in 2007, TavelJigsaw (now known as Rentalcars) in 2010, KAYAK in 2013, OpenTable in 2014 and Momondo group in 2017.
All these businesses became flagships under the umbrella company Priceline. In 2018 the company finally changed its name to Booking Holdings and moved forward by acquiring FareHarbor the same year. Simultaneously Booking Holdings changed its ticker symbol to BKNG .The same year it ranked 46th in the Fortune 50 list and was recognised in the Forbes list of “Best Employers for Women” list.
It is a component of both the S&P 500 and S&P 100 as well as a rank holder in the Fortune 500 list. In the year 2019, almost 845 million nights’ accommodation, 7 million air tickets and 77 million rental car days were booked by the consumers using Booking Holdings’ websites.;
