About the Company
Franklin Resources, Inc. is a multinational holding company headquartered in California, United States. The company, along with its subsidiaries, is known as Franklin Templeton Investments. It was founded in 1947 in New York and was named after Benjamin Franklin. The company had total assets worth $2.5 million in 1957. In 1971, Franklin went public and underwent a steady growth. It acquired Winfield and Company and amassed combined Assets Under Management (AUM) worth about $250 million. Since 1980, its total assets nearly doubled every year for the subsequent six years. Franklin Resources, Inc. share entered the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and began trading under the ticker symbol BEN – another tribute to Benjamin Franklin. BEN stock also became a component on the S&P 500 index.
With the passage of time, BEN emerged as a pioneer in international investing. It expanded business through a series of notable acquisitions. The market crash of 1987 had little impact on its business, and the company acquired the L.F. Rothschild Fund Management Company in 1988. With this acquisition, its AUM went from $2billion in 1982 to about $40 billion in 1989. It acquired Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. in 1992 for $913 million, thus giving it its name of Franklin Templeton. On July 31st, 2020, the company acquired Legg Mason, Inc., which established Franklin as one of the largest independent global investment managers worldwide with combined assets worth $1.4 trillion.
As of 2020, its global operations served more than 165 countries, covering the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the Asia Pacific. Canada, Germany, Pakistan, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, China, India, Israel, South Africa, Poland and Turkey are some countries with BEN’s global offices. It has numerous subsidiaries across the globe, including Franklin Agency, Inc., Franklin Advisors Inc., Franklin Templeton AMC Limited, Templeton International, Inc. and others.
BEN was named one of America’s Largest Public Companies by Forbes in 2018. As of 2020, it ranked 493rd on the list of Fortune 500 companies and 1200th on Forbes’ Global 2000.
