Amex was founded as an express mail business in Buffalo, New York by John Warren Butterfield, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo. In 1857, it ventured into the realm of financial services by launching a "money order" business, after turning shipment services into its virtual monopoly. Later in 1891, traveller’s cheques were introduced to make the process of obtaining cash in foreign countries easier. It was not until the 1980s that the company decided to venture into the investment banking sector. Following this decision, it made several acquisitions between 1980 and 1988, the most important being its purchase of Sanford I. Weill's Shearson Loeb Rhoades and formation of the Shearson/American Express. It then went forward and purchased Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb's investment banking firm in 1984 and the brokerage firm of E.F. Hutton & Co. in 1988. Neither Shearson nor Lehman's name remained by 2008, and they collectively became "American Expression". Amex is both an S&P 100 and S&P 500 component, and trades in the New York Stock Exchange under AXP. It ranked 9th in the Fortune list of the Top 100 Companies to Work for in 2020, which was based on a survey of satisfaction conducted on its employees. Amex also ranked 23rd in the Forbes list of most valuable brands in the world.;
