Founded in 1886 by W.S. Kuhn and James S. Kuhn, American Water Works Inc. is a public utility company. Headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, this American enterprise operates in Canada and the US. As of 2020, the company is the most geographically diverse water and wastewater utility company in the US.
It operates in almost 1,600 communities across 16 American states namely Hawaii, Illinois, California, Kentucky, New York, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa, West Virginia, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and northern parts of Georgia.
The primary assets under American Water’s umbrella are 1,000 groundwater wells, 80 dams, around 51,000 miles of collection pipes and mains, 130 wastewater treatment facilities, 530 groundwater treatment plants, 1,400 water pumping stations, 1,300 treated water storage facilities and 81 surface water treatment plants.
American Water provides both public (residential, industrial & commercial) services and military services in the United States. The public services it offers include leak detection, water heater repair & replacements, water line protection, in-home plumbing emergency program and sewer line protection. The company also owns and operates multiple wastewater & water systems on US military installations.
The company aims to provide clear and high quality water to its customers. It has put its scientists, researchers and plant operators to detect the quality of water in different parts of the United States. It checks the water under five pagers - Cyanotoxins, PFAS, Water Quality, Lead and Legionella. The company helps residents of the US know the water condition in their locality. Its name is indexed in the S&P 500 companies, DUJA component and is ranked 682 on Fortune 500 list as of 2020. AWK Inc. is its symbol under which it trades in the New York Stock Exchange.
