Advanced Micro Device Inc., popularly known as AMD, is an S&P 500 multinational semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It primarily develops computer processors and technologies related to it.
The company started as a Silicon Valley start-up that developed semiconductors with a handful of employees. As of 2020, it had operations located in different parts of the USA, India, China, Canada, and Taiwan. The company also has offices in the UK, UAE, Turkey, Singapore, Russia, Thailand, Mexico, Italy, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Germany, France, Brazil, Hongkong, Australia, Argentina and Belgium.
AMD is popular among the technological community for its microprocessors, graphics cards, motherboard chipsets, embedded system applications, embedded processors, personal computers and workstations. The company also develops laptops for gamers and an array of other enhancement technologies to improve the gaming experience. It offers products for both business and personal use, with some of its featured products including Ryzen 5000 series, RDNA 2, and RADEON RX 6000 series.
As of 2019, it has more than 11,000 employees across the world. In 2020, it celebrated its 25th year of abiding by its corporate responsibility, where AMD put forth its fundamental importance on the People, its Purpose and the Planet.
The company is S&P 500 indexed, also belonging to the NASDAQ 100 companies. It entered the New York Stock Exchange in 1979 under the symbol ADM and the ADM share price reached its peak - $91.18 on September 1st 2020.
After its incorporation on May 1st 1969 by Jerry Sanders, it entered its first significant joint venture in 1977 with Siemens, a conglomerate from Germany. These two companies jointly established the Advanced Micro Computers (AMC), in Germany allowing AMD to explore the field of manufacturing and developing Microcomputers.
In 1981, to sell IBM its microprocessors, Intel entered into a technology exchange agreement with AMD for 10 years. Within these years AMD had several breakthroughs in the field of computer engineering and created the first-ever 512K EPROM in 1984. That year, in particular, was important for the company, as it got featured in the “100 Companies To Work For In America” book as well as made its place in the Fortune 500 list.;
