Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Akamai Technologies Inc. is a global company offering cloud service, content delivery network (CDN) and cybersecurity services. Its content delivery network serves between 15%-30% of the web traffic and is the largest distributed computing platform in the world.
It began its journey by entering the MIT $50K competition with a business proposition based on its consistent hashing research and became one of the finalists. Later that year the founders created its working prototype and took steps towards its incorporation. By mid-1999 the start-up, making sustained profits and enjoying positive cash, free-flow launched its commercial service. On October 29th of the same year, it entered the NASDAQ stock market and reached the highest Akamai share price of $327.60 on December 31st.
The technologies included under it are Akamai intelligent platform, peer-to-peer networking, state of the internet, content delivery process, Network Operations Command Center, OPEN Initiative, visualising the internet and an array of about 60 domains.
Akamai provides its customers with products under four main categories- security, media delivery, web performance and network operator. Apart from these, it offers services under ‘24/7 product support’ to assist, guide and manage the products for its customers.
Its clientele consists of some of the behemoths of the world such as Apple, Microsoft, Adobe System, Airbnb, ESPN, DBS, J.C. Penny, Yahoo!, NBC Sports, MTV Networks, NASA etc. In August 2017, Nintendo launched its new mobile gaming app and game console around the globe through the Media Delivery Solutions provided by Akamai.
From 2000 to 2020, it has acquired 26 companies and been involved in several strategic relationships with companies like Apple and Microsoft. Among these acquisitions, few that stand out are that of cybersecurity provided by Prolexic Technologies for $390 million, Cotendo, Inc. for more than $278 million and SOASTA for an undisclosed all-cash amount.;
