About the Company

American International Group Inc. is a multinational finance and insurance corporation. Also known as AIG, the company has its corporate headquarters in New York City and multiple offices across the globe. As of 2020, AIG operated in more than 80 countries and jurisdictions. The company listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1984. AIG was built on a legacy that dates back to the early 1900s. American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU) was founded on December 19th, 1919, as a general insurance agency in Shanghai, China. The company opened its first office in the United States in 1926 as American International Underwriters Corporation (AIU). In subsequent years, its business grew rapidly. Alongside expansions throughout China, Southeast Asia and Latin America, the company also entered Europe and the United Kingdom. In 1967, American International Group, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware, US. It was established as a unifying umbrella institution for its general and life insurance businesses. American International Group, Inc. offers a range of insurance services to customers, spanning across casualty insurance, retirement solutions, mortgage insurance, life insurance and other financial services. Through its units of general insurance, life & retirement and investments, the company aims to support its clients in their personal and business ventures. In 1990, AIG acquired International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), which was the world’s largest aircraft leasing company at the time. Numerous companies across the globe operate under the AIG umbrella. As of 2019, the company had notable subsidiaries and affiliations like AIG American General Life Insurance Company, VALIC, AIG Property Casualty, AIG Life and Retirement Company and AIG Global Real Estate, among many others. As of 2020, AIG was one of the largest insurance companies in the world. Over the years, American International Group, Inc. has made multiple investments and acquisitions. Some noteworthy acquisitions by AIG include Validas, acquired for $5.56 billion in 2018, Laya Healthcare for $93 million in 2015 and Kinder Morgan for $22.00 billion in 2007.;
