Indigo Airlines, primarily known for its economy class and budget-friendly travel options, launched its first-ever business-class service, “IndiGo Stretch”, on Nov 14, 2024.
Back in 2020, IndiGo's CEO, Ronojoy Dutta, stated: “We are a low-cost airline.” “We are not targeting business class passengers.” However, four years later, IndiGo introduced the business class in November, 2024. But what led them to?
Backed by economy flyers, Indigo has a market share of 61%. Likewise, Air India and Akasa Air have a market share of 28.7% and 4.6% respectively.
Aiming for further growth, Indigo had to take this decision due to intense competition from Akasa Air and Air India. The launch of IndiGo Stretch has received positive feedback from travellers!
Despite the enthusiasm, Indian airlines with premium services have faced challenges: Jet Airways- shut in 2019 Kingfisher- shut in 2012 Air Sahara - sold to Jet Airways in 2007
It would be interesting to see if it unfolds any better for IndiGo.
