Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) was started on July 1, 2015, with the goal of achieving irrigation sector investments at the field level. The plan intends to provide end-to-end irrigation supply chain solutions, including water sources, distribution networks, and farm-level applications. PMKSY focuses not only on developing water sources for guaranteed irrigation but also on constructing protective irrigation by capturing rainwater at the micro-level via ‘Jal Sanchay’ and ‘Jal Sinchan.’ Micro-irrigation is an important element of the strategy to optimize farm-level water usage efficiency.

The overarching aim of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) would be to provide all agricultural fields in the country with access to some form of protected irrigation, allowing them to produce ‘per drop more crop,’ resulting in much-desired rural wealth.

Objectives of Krishi Sinchai Yojana

  • Convergence of irrigation investments at the field level (preparation of district level and, if required, sub-district level water use plans).
  • Improve physical access to water on the farm and extend cultivable land under guaranteed irrigation (Har Khet ko Pani).
  • Water source, distribution, and efficient usage are all integrated to make the greatest use of water through appropriate technology and practices.
  • Improve the efficiency of on-farm water usage to decrease waste and improve availability in both duration and extent.
  • Increase the use of precision irrigation and other water-saving technology (More crop per drop).
  • Improve aquifer recharge and implement long-term water conservation strategies.
  • Ensure the integrated development of rainfed regions through the use of the watershed approach to soil and water conservation, groundwater regeneration, runoff prevention, and other NRM operations.
  • Encourage farmers and grass-roots field functionaries to participate in extension activities related to water harvesting, water management, and crop alignment.
  • Investigate the viability of utilizing treated municipal wastewater for peri-urban agriculture.
  • Increase private investment in irrigation.

Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana

Farmers are the true beneficiaries of this scheme. There are several qualifying requirements that an applicant must meet in order to participate in the scheme. The following are the PMKSY eligibility criteria: –

  • Members of self-help organizations, trust cooperative societies, and producer farmer groups are able to participate in this program by registering.
  • Farmers who cultivate land under a leasing arrangement may also apply for the PM Krishi irrigation project.
  • This program is only available to Indian citizens.

Scheme Components

PMKSY is made up of six parts. Component specifies the irrigation facility made accessible to farmers under this plan. All of these elements are addressed more below: –

1. AIBP Programme The Central Government of India started an expedited irrigation benefit scheme in 1996. This initiative was created to help with the implementation of big and medium irrigation projects. The program’s initial goal is to expedite projects and give advanced resources to the state. The priority of this plan was to help and benefit tribal and drought-prone areas. AIBP has formed a part of the PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana since its inception.
2. Har Khet Ko Pani This initiative was initiated previously and then cooperated with the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana. The majority of cultivable lands have been targeted for irrigation under this program. This software is a key component of the strategy.
3. Per Drop More Crop Micro Irrigation To improve water utilization, the Government of India has supported a Mini irrigation scheme. This initiative will improve agricultural water usage efficiency. Many suitable technologies and strategies have been created to address this. This comprises sprinklers and drips irrigation to encourage farmers to utilize water in a more sustainable manner. This initiative was formally accepted in June 2010, and it was afterward included in the PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana.
4. Per Drop More Crops Other Intervention There are several more treatments involved in per drop more crops. This displays official reports on the correct use of water without the waste and the distribution of it to farmers. It has been reported that a total of 1.5 crores has been allotted to Andaman and Nicobar for the implementation of a drop more crop component. Similarly, several other states have introduced various forms of agricultural development assistance from time to time.
5. Watershed Watershed development is a component of the PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana. This is a program that was founded by the Department of Land Resources and the Ministry of Rural Development. Previously, this program was overseen by the federal government. A technical group was created in 1994 to examine drought-prone regions and the desert development initiative. This was done to identify the flaw and make suggestions for improvement. Following a thorough evaluation, the scheme was executed in several segments, resulting in well-designed plants on the watershed. Leaving some areas, the results have been less than ideal.
6. Convergence with MGNREGA As part of the convergence with MGNREGA, the Pradhanmantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana component name is Pradhanmantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana. This demonstrates that the MGNREGA plan has been included for irrigation purposes. The MGNREGA program will provide thorough information about the scheme’s implementation and its advantages to farmers.
