The Dhanalakshmi initiative aims to reduce female infanticide instances in India by giving insurance coverage. The initiative also promotes female child education and provides enticing insurance plans to discourage early marriage.

The government of India, in collaboration with the Women and Child Development Organization, created the Dhanalakshmi plan to minimize the number of female infanticide cases in the nation, as well as to provide insurance and an education incentive. Though the plan has since been phased out in favour of more appealing initiatives launched by the government throughout the years, it did put many things into perspective – particularly with relation to female children. Renuka Chowdhury, the then-Minister of Women and Child Development Organization, suggested the plan, which was endorsed by the government. It got almost 5,000 applications in 11 backward Indian states in a short period of time.

The scheme’s primary goal was to minimize the number of female infanticide cases, which remain alarmingly high in most states across the country. The plan also intended to eliminate child marriage by providing parents with appealing insurance coverage, encouraging parents to educate their children, and paying some medical expenditures for female infants. The scheme’s goal was to respect the lives of female kids rather than consider them as a liability.

Dhanalakshmi Scheme Eligibility

In order to provide female children with a better future, the initiative gave monetary incentives to their parents. This plan, like most others, had eligibility requirements:

  • The plan was open to any female children born after November 8, 2008.
  • All girl children, regardless of socioeconomic condition, were eligible.
  • Regardless of the number of female children in the family, all-girl children were eligible.
  • The girl kid has to be a resident of India.

Benefits of the Scheme

  • All girl infants born after November 8, 2008, who were enrolled in the plan and under the government’s supervision, received an initial financial incentive of Rs.5,000.
  • An immunization payment incentive of Rs.1,250 was offered to female newborns from 6 weeks to 24 months. This covered the expense that parents in India’s backward areas would have to spend in order to immunize their children.
  • The plan paid the expenditures of a girl child’s education, from enrollment through retention in school until the eighth grade. Parents were offered a financial incentive of Rs.1,000 for enrolling their children in school. From class 1 through class 5, parents received a financial incentive of Rs.500 each year. Every year, parents were given a monetary incentive of Rs.750 for their daughter’s secondary school education. A total of Rs.5,750 was offered as a monetary incentive to educate the girl child till the eighth grade.
  • To deter child marriage, the plan provided parents with Rs.1 lakh insurance cover when their daughter reached the age of 18 and had not yet married.
  • The monetary incentives were dependent on the girl’s age. For example, if a girl kid has previously completed Grade 1, she is entitled to earn monetary incentives for her schooling rather than immunization and birth registration.
